Shawn
Burgett - BIO (updated 2006)
OK, a
little more info:
I was born
and raised in central and southeast Ohio.
I'm 35 years old, and the proud father of 4 wonderful
daughters.
I'm a self taught guitarist, I've played for over 20
years. I've also been singing and writing songs for about
20 years. I've been recording music for about as long. I
now have 10 full length CDs of my original songs and
continue working toward more. I currently perform live,
doing solo acoustic shows at select small clubs and
private venues around the area. I also work with
other artists or with a full band at larger venues. I've done
lots of appearances as a headlining act, as an opening
act for regional bands like Destination Blues and
McGuffey Lane, and as the host of several open mics. I've
occasionally had the chance to sit in with area acoustic
acts like
Chris Logsdon, Lisa Hill, Boley & Fincke, and the
great Bob Sauls.
The music I
write includes everything from blues and roots music to
americana, adult alternative, ballads, folk songs, jazz,
cross-over country, rock, and pop. At shows I sometimes
cover classic rock and songs by great singer-songwriters
like Jim Croce, Dan Folgelberg and countless others.
I grew up being influenced by everyone from Hank Williams
and Merle Haggard to Elvis, the Beatles, Eric Clapton,
Led Zeppelin, Bob Seger and the Eagles as well as other
writers and performers. I tend to incorporate a lot of
styles into what I write, play and teach. Without
question, guitar is my main instrument, my favorite hobby
and my first love. It's been a source of inspiration,
discipline, entertainment, and income for most of my
life.
I began as a percussionist, which helped me develop a
sense of rhythm and timing, and over the years, I've
learned to play harmonica, piano, bass, drums and a few
other stringed instuments. Being versatile as a musician
is very important to me, and has served me well in my
work as a session musician and project producer. I'm able
to provide several instruments and in some cases, entire
band soundtracks for artists who write but don't play
instruments or have their own band. I sometimes work as
an arranger or consultant for projects. I've done live
appearances and recording projects for many community
groups such as the Muskingum Community Foundation &
Visitor's Center,Jaycees, P.U.R.E. and others. Over the
past few years, I've also been involved in community
guitar lessons through Children's Arts Program, SPiCYAM
and other local groups. I've recorded on and produced
projects for several area musicians, including Tom
Martindale, Kyle David Watts, Terry Thompson, Gate21,
Angie Martindale, Betsy Lynn, Mike Brown, Doug Edwards,
Ken Richardson, Len Martin, and many more.
Live sound
is not my favorite job (because usually you can't play
music at the same time), but it's an important job I take
it seriously when I do it.
I think it's important to have a good, clean sound, where
all the instruments are discernable, and especially where
the words can be understood.
In the last few years, I've done sound
for shows like these:
Ashez band, New Lex Classic Riders, Bill Kokie Tribute
Show,
K-95.5fm, CMT & Walmart's Farm Aid Benefit with Craig
Morgan
as well as several smaller festivals, weddings and
parties.
And, oh yeah... I also like: drawing, painting, trivia,
chocolate, tea, good conversation, the 3 stooges,
laughing, women with character, Shakespeare,
staying up late, sleeping late, Jesus, Abe Lincoln,
freedom, kindness, hugs, potatoes, women who are willing
to put up with a character, extra cheese,
old black & white TV, knowledge, wisdom, class and
cartoons.
